The National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA) has been tasked on finding a solution to end the conflict between herders and farmers in the country.
The conflicts in different parts of the country have led to numerous grazing bans and laws.
Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu who made the call, said the agency which is under his ministry must find a way of creating grass that is nutritious and requires limited supply of water to grow.
He said that this must be done to help the country solve the conflicts and find ways to preserve and protect the wide variety of animals found in the country.
The Minister said this in Abuja at the national stakeholders’ sensitization workshop on animal biotechnology applications and regulatory perspectives organised by NABDA in collaboration with International partners.
He said, “I am very happy that this Workshop is examining how biotechnology can be used to improve our animal agriculture. This is very important for our dear nation that has the largest population in Africa and one of the largest in the world. We have many mouths to feed. We also need to feed our factories with the products from animal agriculture.
“NABDA has to play a greater role in helping our dear nation find a solution to the conflict that exists between animal and crop farmers in the country. NABDA has to intensify research in improving productivity and yield in animal farming in the country.”
